Anger explodes upon the streets of the world

Breakdown in law and order... as the social contract crumbles

As the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" keeps growing, the dispossessed will become increasingly alienated, disaffected and discontented. (see "class warfare")
Those who do not feel they receive a fair share of the benefits of  the economy will take their bitterness and their anger to the streets to be expressed in rioting, looting, and other violent and lawless  behavior.
Economically marginalized people will rise up and demand their equal rights!
As life becomes more difficult people are driven to lawlessness and predation as a desperate last resort in order to survive. The disadvantaged simply resort to taking what they want without respect for the l;aw.
When the unemployed /dispossesed lose their sense of belonging they abandon their loyalty to the state and it's laws who they perceive as responsible for their deprived condition. They will take out their anger against the authorities and even against the infrastructure. (remember,we do not destroy what we cherish).

Is anger and civil disobediance a valid response to perceived injustice?
Quelling violence (and the breakdown of the social order)by whatever means necessary
How does the state restore confidence in the legitimacy of its authority ?
How to achieve compliance with the rule of law and restore social order?

Are we going to deal with the underlying causes of the breakdown in social order (lawlessness, criminality),by reducing the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" through  a more equitable redistribution of wealth, (by creating a truely "egalitarian society")... or are we just going to use the police and the army to suppress the rioters,  and build more prisons (criminalizing the marginal members of society) to contain them?
If we do not assist these people (the "lost generation") to become full participants and contributing members of society by providing them with educational and employment oportunities, this social problem will surely escalate!

  3. The social cost of inequality is instability and an increase in criminal behaviour (a loss of social order and cohesion),
as the disposessed realize that the rules of the game
    lack fairness.

  4. The incarceration rate in the United States of America is the highest in the world. As of 2009, theincarceration rate was 743 per 100,000 of national population (0.743%).[2]
In comparison, Russia had the second highest, at 577 per 100,000, Canada was 123rd in the world as 117 per 100,000, and China had 120 per 100,000.[2]

While Americans only represent about 5 percent of the world's population, nearly one-quarter (25%) of the entire world's inmates have been incarcerated in the United States in recent years.[3]
Imprisonment of America's 2.3 million prisoners, costing $24,000 per inmate per year, and $5.1 billion in new prison construction, consumes $60 billion in budget expenditures.

  5. The trouble is the perceived grievances of the disffected/agrieved have no legitemacy!

  6. This is how the dispossessed are further marginalized and dehumanized--by refusing to accept and respect their feelings and perceptions as having validity(i.e.having value).
In a materialistic culture where the worth/status of a person is judged by their wealth, the "have nots" are regarded as "politically acceptable" targets of discrimination and invalidation.
Finally they have no option but to lash out in violence against their perceived oppressors.

  9. No peace without justice.

For every such heroic instance of someone pulling themself out of the gutter by their bootstraps...there are many more who are unable to lift themselves out of their destitute circumstances.
They have lived so long on the fringes of society(and been subjected to so much rejection and abuse) ...so severely damaged by deprivation, poverty, and the lack of love that they have lost all hope of being healed/redeemed or of being rescued to a better life.
Then there are those who resort to violence and crime. They lash out in self-defence like cornered animals.
Their method is violence; their motivation is seeking restitution for injustice. To them their grievances are justified. ..and their violent actions are a desperate attempt to achieve justice.

  11. If we do not work to lighten the load (to lift them up) of those who are hurting,...their hurt will be visited upon us!
The oppressed cannot be isolated/segregated; they are amongst us!
    We are all connected.
The pain that they feel is also ours!

Sometimes we shut out and are incapable of feeling the pain of others and responding to alleviate it... until their pain is directly inflicted upon us!

  12. There are those who violate the law out of economic deprivation or because they are hungry (the poor).

Then there are those who have no scruples and will do anything and everything to make money. They are not constrained by laws or conscience (the greedsters).

Wch of these two is the worst criminal?!
