Death and destruction cause humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine

  War is madness! Death,destruction,miser y

It  has taken many generations for Ger.an people to live down the legacy of Hittlerand nazism;

Simiarly It will take many generations for Russian people t o live doown the legacy of Putin!

Putin h s s failed too  nderstand the negative  imp act this war will have on his own people...and indeed on the whole of humnity .Iternationsl sanctions h a ve undermined  the russian economy and turned Russia into a pariah state

This war has. set Russia back by  50 years!

There are no winners in this war!

It is not possible to win the hearts and minds of apeople by the use of force. It only f oments hatred that lasts for generrations .!

Russia should have continued onthe. path ofg!lasnost  and perystroika ala Gorbachev!

Kiev will be to Ukraine what Stalingradd was to Russia.

  ******

Instead of. spending a collective 1.8 trillion dollars per year(total global spending on "defence")  fighting each other, we. should spend that money fighting our common enemy wch is climate change.

*****

It is possible that civilizations wch reach a. certain stage of technological advancement end up destroying themselves. If a civilizations moral development does not keep pace with its technologiical development, the. technology will destroy it!

This may be why we have not made contact with any alien civilization. There are 100 billion stars in our galaxy ,and 40 billion earth-,like planets wch cou!d give rise to and  sustain life.                .But it would be extremely rare for aliens who have developed the technology to master intersteller travel (or even intersteller communication) to have survived their technology!        That is,technological development may at some point  become maladaptive!

Inspirational speech given by silent-movies comedian Charlie Chaplin in his celebrated film, The Great Dictator. “We think too much and feel too little. More  than machinerywe need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost…”

The Final Speech from

"The Great Dictator"

I'm sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost…

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent p

To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish…

Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!

In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!

Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!

  1. There's a silver lining:
Banning. the importation of Russian oil has escalated the price of oil and gas . This will incentivize/accelerate the transition to green energy and electric vehicles.
Rapidly rising gas prices may be bad for the economy ,but it is good for the e nvironment.
Higher food and gas prices means the price of everything is going up ,...and higher inflation means higher interest rates
Higherinterestratesslow down the economy by reducing spending and reducing consumption--
wch is the best thing that can happen for the environm e nt and for addressing climate change
In the broader view, this war may end up having the unforeseen consequence of saving the planet!

This war is a decision point in that we can make the choice to wean ourselves from fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to clean energy, thereby ending our dependence on despots like Putin and oil companies everywhere!

  6. There is nothing more tragic for humanity. There is nothing more uncivilized than bombs and other weapons made for killing people.
Putin has dumped tons of explosives on Ukraine ,and turned Ukrainian cities into rubble
Putin has no regard for human life.
This war will stain Russian history for centuries!
It is incredible that this could be happening in the 21st century!
It is astonishing that human beings have still not learned how to resolve conflict and disagreement without resorting to force , violence, and war!

  8. The crime of war is being commited in the twenty first century before the eyes of the world.
This evil is being witnessed by all humanity!
The entire world bears the economic consequences of this war.
. It hurts the whole of humanity.

This war will make it more difficult for humanity to unite and cooperate to fight the real enemy wch is global warming and the climate crisis!.
To save ourselves we must save the whole planet. This war distracts us from that common goal.

The negative effects of war persist for decades and centuries

It costs too much in human lives and resouurces. All particcipants in war suffer great loss. There are no winners.
In every war the greatest suffering is inflictedd on civilians(innocent people)

  13. Ilya Yashin before going to prison in Russia spoke up

Affirming that ‘it’s better to spend ten years behind bars as an honest man than to burn silently in shame for the blood being shed by your government,’ he addressed Putin directly:

‘Mr. Putin! As you look at the consequences of this monstrous war, you probably realise what a big mistake you made on 24 February. No one is greeting our army with flowers. We are called invaders and occupiers. Your name is now firmly associated with death and destruction. You have brought terrible misfortune to the Ukrainian people, who will probably never forgive us. But you’re not only at war with the Ukrainians. You’re at war with your own people…You are taking away the Russian people’s home. Hundreds of thousands of Russians are leaving their homeland because they don’t want to kill or be killed. Those people are running from you, Mr. president. Haven’t you noticed that?’

  15. Humanity is descending into global conflagration
Western liberal democracies vs the axis of autocracy .
Both China and Russia are threatened by democratic opposition movements .Hence China suppressed Hong Kong, and Russia could not allow Ukraine,s deepening ties with the west. Both China and Russia feel under siege by America. For Mr Putin the invasion of Ukraine is not just a. bid to regain historic Russian territory. It is a war on the west, and China is the most powerful partner it can see..But China and Russia have no mutual defence treaty. Neither country wants to get involved in the others conflicts.Russia's aggression has shattered the taboo against territorial aggrandizement by the use of force/violence.Western governments feel compelled to restore this convention in order to demonstrate that the world/humanity has moved beyond an age. when the mighty take by force whatever they want.
Mr Xi sees the great contest in the 21st century will be between China and America --one he believes China is destined to win! Xi sees the main global contest as being between a rising China and a declining America.
