COVID-19 going viral

We have no experience and little information about this new virus.
Will it's transmission rate slow down(like the flu viruses) with the onset of warmer temperatures in the northern hemisphere ,
or will it continue to spread year round at its current rate.
Will it become an annual event?

In my previous message I outlined a scenario wch would be the worst case possibility--a global epidemic.
With unrestrained air travel the virus can hitchhike to every part of the planet.
To use a wildfire analogy, infected carriers are like embers blown ahead of the main fire thus establishing countless new nodes(epicenters) of infection.

One possible unforeseen positive consequence of this global health crisis is it just might bring humankind together in the face of a common enemy--an out-of-control global epidemic.
Can humans set aside their petty differences and unify to fight a global enemy?

Subject: new chinese virus continues to spread at unabated rate

Once  it spreads to developing nations their healthcare resources will be overwhelmed. They will not be able to contain/stop it!

Projecting the current mortality rate of 2% into the future....
when the number infected reaches 1 million,
the virus will have claimed 25,000 people!
If 1.4 billlion people (the population of China) become infected,
28 million will die.
If 7 billion people (the global human population) become infected,140 million will die!

Even at 2% fatality rate , if it continues to spread at the current rate,it will decimate the human population ...before it runs its course and fizzles out!

It seems that seeing that human beings have failed to take effective measures to protect the planet's biosphere (and continue to ignore the perils of climate change),Mother Nature has unleashed a new virus upon the planet--a virus that humans have no previous contact with and therefore have no immunity to.
This virus can potentially  infect every human being on the planet that it comes in contact with.
No one is immune.
 There is no immunity

As terrible as this contagion is, there  could be nothing better for the health of the planet than a drastic decrease in human population and a global recession!
Even a 2% clawback in the global human population would mean a significant release of pressure on the planet's threatened ecosystems!

The current theory is that this virus underwent a spontaneous  mutation wch enabled it to jump from bats to being able to use humans as its host. But it is not beyond imagining that it may have  escaped (or been liberated from) some molecular biology lab where its molecular components were synthesized and assembled.

China now has two female children (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/12/04/chinese-gene-edited-twins-created-immune-hiv-may-have-unintended/ that were genetically engineered to be immune to HIV.
Presumably all the progeny/descendents of these two people will inherit this resistance.

The same gene-modifying technology can be used to create and clone an entire population resistant to this and any other virus.
Years ago Monsanto developed the "proof of concept" for this technology by introducing glyphosate resistance into  the genome of many grain crops.

P.S.Corvid-19 is about 20 times as deadly as the flu (the death rate from influenza virus is. 0.1%).Its about as deadly as the 1918 Spanish Flu wch also had a 2% mortality rate.
(In Ebola outbreaks death rates have ranged from 25% to 90%).
But even at just a 2% death rate, the Spanish Flu was responsible for 40 to 50 million deaths!
That's nothing to sneeze at!

Will Coronavirus Break Our Addiction to Cheap Imports?

by Sarah Pope MGA/ Feb 9, 2020/

I’ve often thought over the years that it would take a catastrophe of one kind or another to break the world’s addiction to cheap imports. While it’s still too early to tell, the novel coronavirus and the tragically unfolding scenario in China might just fill the bill.
The truth is that the vast majority of people don’t think much about the destructive nature of their day-to-day habits, nor do they care to be reminded about it by you and me.
These zombie consumers will not voluntarily alter OCD shopping habits and routines unless forced to. This is the case even though said habits are decimating our oceans and planet with resource-depleting, pollution-spewing factories and the never-ending back and forth of bunker-fuel-belching tankers.
What is “bunker fuel”?
It’s the type of petroleum used by the world’s 90,000 cargo ships. It contains up to 2,000 times the amount of the toxic form of sulfur compared to diesel fuel used in automobiles.
Fast fact: Over the course of a single year, ONE massive container ship equals the pollution of 50 million cars.
According to the Guardian:
Shipping is by far the biggest transport polluter in the world. The world’s 90,000 vessels burn approx 370 million tons of [bunker] fuel per year emitting 20 million tons of Sulphur Oxides. That equates to 260 times more Sulphur Oxides being emitted by ships than the worlds entire car fleet. One large ship alone can generate approx 5,200 tonnes of sulphur oxide pollution in a year, meaning that 15 of the largest ships now emit as much SOx as the worlds 760 million cars. (1)
In other words, driving a Tesla or installing solar panels on your roof doesn’t offset an addiction to Home Goods

Large Retailers Depend on Chinese Imports
It’s no secret that the business model of a number of American retailing chains depends heavily on a steady supply of Chinese imports.
For example, the retailer Fossil depends on Chinese goods for about 40% of its sales. Dollar Tree has a similar dependence with 41% of its goods sourced directly from Chinese factories. Lenovo, a Beijing-based technology manufacturer, is Best Buy’s fifth-largest vendor. (2)
Wal-mart, the largest retailer in the world, is the single biggest importer of Chinese consumer goods. In some cases, the amount surpasses the trade volume of entire countries.
Global sourcing is now fully integrated into the company’s operations — giving Wal-Mart enormous leverage worldwide. Foreign, and particularly, Chinese products account for nearly all of Wal-Mart’s highly popular low opening price point goods.
According to Frank Yuan, a former middleman who did business with Wal-Mart:
If you look at [Wal-Mart’s] shoes or housewares, 80 or 90 percent is coming out of China. (3)
Don’t just blame Wal-Mart though!
With the expiration of US quotas on textile imports, the US apparel market is now dominated by Chinese imports, with estimates as high as 80% of the market.

Coronavirus Shutting Down Supply Chains
Most of China has been closed since late January 2020 due to an extended Lunar holiday to fight the coronavirus outbreak. (4)
Factories slated to reopen February 9 are still idling, however. Even when they do resume business as usual, market analysts are anticipating further delays because the coronavirus isn’t even close to being contained. Taiwan News reports that Bejing and Shanghai are now on lockdown as well, although this shocking development is going unreported by Western media.
Ben May, director of global macro research at Oxford Economics, puts it plainly:
Once production in the country resumes, transport and logistics bottlenecks may still lead to slow shipments. (5)
In fact, a number of large U.S. companies with operations or suppliers in China have already said they expect supply chain disruptions whether or not factories reopen soon as claimed by the Chinese government.

Coronavirus Silver Lining
It is clear that there is much we don’t know yet about how the novel coronavirus may temporarily or permanently alter the flow of goods on Planet Earth.
Currently, the outbreak has yet to peak in China’s Hubei Province, where Wuhan, the epicenter, is located. Estimates are that cases could continue rising at minimum for a couple more weeks. (6)
The truth is that no one really knows especially since it appears that Chinese authorities may be lying bout the number of cases and deaths. As just one of many data points, reports are that Hubei’s crematoriums may be running 24/7 suggesting a death toll far higher than the official numbers reported by China. (7)
While no one wishes for the destruction wreaked by a pandemic to force the issue, it is very possible that the silver lining of coronavirus 2020 is a considerable slowing of the flow of cheap imported goods. Companies experiencing shortages may then be forced to quickly create new supply chains potentially closer to the consumers they serve.
And, consumers bereft of a steady and reliable stream of cheap imports to slake their shopping addiction might finally be forced to rely more heavily on locally produced goods.
Such an outcome would, without a doubt, be hugely beneficial for supporting our communities and restoring our damaged planet.

YES …. BINGO. NO ONE talks about the horrible bunker fuel used by these tankers. It’s absolutely obscene. To the point where if I know something was made across the Pacific and it took a tanker to get to me, I SERIOUSLY look for an alternative so I won’t have to buy it. Makes me ill just thinking about all that pollution. I realize in some cases we have no choice as multinational globalist corporations controlling the narrative have boxed us in with some product groups, but in most instances, we DO have a choice to NOT buy this stuff. And, our wallets, our homes and our planet would be far better off for making that decision. Take the $$ saved and go on a nice low impact vacation with your family and make some memories. MUCH better than spending your money on all this stuff that just ends up in a storage unit or a landfill within a few years. No, the thrift shops (mostly) don’t want it either, by the way. That’s another myth about addiction buying. Vacation memories last forever.

Here here to the world stopping the shopping addiction..thanks Sarah

This article is excellent. That cheap stuff is usually toxic, too. The majority of that clothing is manufactured with chemicals and toxic dyes that run off into the water adding to our planet’s pollution problem. Washing before use doesn’t remove the toxins either although that is always a good idea and may help remove some of the dyes. BTW always wash with a non-toxic detergent otherwise you are coating toxins with toxins. I prefer a powder detergent – they are more economical and save water.

What a ship.....no wonder 'Made in China ' is displacing North American made goods big time. This monster transports goods across the Pacific in just 5 days!!  Another two will soon be commissioned.

These ships were commissioned by Wal-Mart to get their imported goods from China .

They hold an incredible 15,000 containers and have a 207 foot deck beam!

A 2% mortality rate, means that 98% of those who get infected do survive!

  2. Quite right! This virus has a lower death rate than Sars or Mers, but it seems to be more contagious.
One active carrier can infect a large number ofpeople as evidenced by what happened on the Diamond Princess cruiseship where it spread from one person to 600 people!
Its global spread is outpacing efforts to contain it.
This epidemic could quickly get out of control as secondary epicenters spring up and numbers escalate exponentially to a critical mass.
There is no evidence that the transmission rate is slowing.
There is a suggestion that the 2% fatality rate may be an underestimate:

    http://www.shadolsonshow.com/2020/01/28/wuhan-virus-hits-83-infection-rate-for-those-exposed-15-fatality-rate-53000-infected/

There seems to be no information as to how far in advance of (or after) exhibiting symptoms a carrier is infectious

  3. Tnis new coronavirus outbreak is more severe than Sars and Mers.
Covid-19 has already caused .more total infections and deaths than Sars and Mers combined!
It is particularly deadly to elderly people. (mortality rate is around 15% ? for people over 65 --much higher than the 2% average that has been reported for the general population)
It spreads very efficiently, and all efforts(even drastic isolation and "best practice" methods) at arresting its spread have failed.
There is no vaccine ,no natural immunnity, and no treatment.
    Healthcare resources are being overwhelmed.

It is not "the end of the world", but it is a public health emergency of international concern.

  5. Viruses retain their viability longer at colder temperatures(winter),and are inactivated at high temperatures(summer).
Hence the. seasonal nature of cold and influenza outbreaks.
We do not know if COVID-19 infections
will slow during the summer months, as some respiratory viral infections do. This would be the best case if it follows the seasonal pattern of other respiratory viruses.
But even if it does, we need to expect a second wave in the fall, following the path of influenza viruses

Results from autopsies of COVID-19 victims suggest that the severe pulmonary inflammation could be relieved to some extent by using corticosteroids and ventilators.

Over the past 100 years of American voting history,a president seeking re-election when the stockmarket was in decline and unemployment was rising, has not been re-elected.

A few days ago, Trump was claiming that this is a minor blip and the virus will miraculously go away soon; on Monday (March 16,2020), something seemed to have put the fear of God in the White House; a national emergency was declared and Trump was suddenly talking about social distancing and washing hands.
the “Imperial College report on COVID-19”, was the reason for the 180-degree shift in the Trump administration’s response and call for preparedness to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the UK, the crazy idea of letting everyone get infected to achieve “herd immunity” has been replaced by proclamations of mitigation and suppression(issued directive to self-isolate).

The change in government strategy has followed the publication on Monday (March 16,2020),of a UK government-commissioned report from Imperial College London’s COVID-19 Response Team, which models different strategies and outcomes, for the UK and the US.
The Imperial College Report paints a dire picture of the future and What we must do.
An early copy of the report was shared with the White House over the weekend.

Trump and the GOP will take steps reluctantly, use the occasion to demonize Democrats, China, immigrants and all his “enemies”, spend trillions of tax and borrowed dollars to shore up businesses and their rich buddies(1.4 trillion stimulus package is mostly a corporate bailout), take credit for every little improvement of the situation and blame Democrats for any bad news.
How this will play out politically, how elections will be affected,(will they even take place?,)will Democracy survive — these are questions that will be discussed across the punditry class over the next few months,

Bioweapons Expert Speaks Out About Novel Coronavirus:

    https://www.organicconsumers.org/news/bioweapons-expert-speaks-out-about-novel-coronavirus

There is this Biosafety Level 4 facility there in Wuhan. It's the first in China, and it was specifically set up to deal with the coronavirus and SARS. SARS is basically a weaponized version of the coronavirus.

There have been leaks before of SARS out of this facility, and indeed the only reason for these BSL-4 facilities, based on my experience, is the research, development, testing and stockpiling of offensive biological weapons.

For that reason, I stated my opinion: That this Wuhan coronavirus leaked out of that BSL-4 facility … maybe mid-November … and the Chinese government has been lying about it and covering up ever since."

Winnipeg is Canada's equivalent of our own Fort Detrick. It's a BSL-4 facility, and yes, they research, develop tests, manufacture and stockpile every type of hideous biological warfare weapon that we know of. So, some of this technology could have been stolen from Winnipeg. I don't know about that but, as I said, the Wuhan BSL-4 was already working on this to begin with.

This story was published on Oct. 3, 2019.

A Canadian government scientist at the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg made at least five trips to China in 2017-18, including one to train scientists and technicians at China's newly certified Level 4 lab, which does research with the most deadly pathogens, according to travel documents obtained by CBC News.

Xiangguo Qiu — who was escorted out of the Winnipeg lab in July amid an RCMP investigation into what's being described by Public Health Agency of Canada as a possible "policy breach" — was invited to go to the Wuhan National Biosafety Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences twice a year for two years, for up to two weeks each time.

"This will be third-party funded, and therefore no cost to [the Public Health Agency of Canada]," say the documents, obtained through access to information requests. The identity of the third-party was redacted.

During a Sept. 19-30, 2017, trip, she also met with collaborators in Beijing, the documents say, but their names have also been blacked out.

Qiu, her husband Keding Cheng and her students from China were removed on July 5 from Canada's only Level 4 lab — one equipped to work with the most serious and deadly human and animal diseases, such as Ebola. Security access for the couple and the Chinese students was revoked, sources who work at the lab previously told CBC News.

      https://www.express.co.uk/news/weird/1253135/coronavirus-genetically-engineered-bioweapon-wuhan-lab-leak-covid19-spt

According to this  report Covid-19 has an additional gene at the end of its RNA genome not seen in other corona viruses.
This nucleotide sequence codes for a protein wch promotes the attachment of the virus to host target cells.
This makes it more efficient in spreading in the human population compared to other coronaviruses
Such 'gain of function' can be obtained through either genetic engineering or natural mutation.
(still it seems odd that an entire gene coding for a protein with a specific function could be added by "natural mutation" ,since mutations usually involve the substitution of single nucleotides-- not fully-formed new genes)

In 2015, Ralph Baric, an infectious-disease researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill published a study on his team’s efforts to engineer a virus with the surface protein of the SHC014 coronavirus, found in horseshoe bats in China, and the backbone of one that causes human-like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in mice.

They found that the hybrid virus could infect human airway cells in vitro , and caused disease in mice, according to the team’s results, which were published in Nature Magazine.

The results demonstrate the ability of the SHC014 surface protein to bind and infect human cells, validating concerns that this virus—or other coronaviruses found in bat species—may be capable of making the leap to people without first evolving in an intermediate host.

Could Covid-19 be such a recombinant virus created in a laboratory using existing genome-modifying technology?
Could Covid-19 be mankind's nemesis for his conceited tampering with the building blocks of life?
More complex biological organisms created by genetic engineering and unleashed into the environment may become far worse nightmares!!
Genetically novel bacteria, plants, and animals are being routinely created by gene editing techniques in molecular biology labs throughout the world.
These man-modified synthetic frankenorganisms will pose a far greater menace than the synthetic chemicals that have poisoned the planet and threaten all life with extinction.

Instead of wasting resources to weaponizing microbial pathogens to be deployed against people ,we should be using those precious resources to protect humankind from naturally-ocurring infectious diseases.

In times of adversity human beings can respond with kindness, generosity, and caring.

P.S. Thanks to Corvid-19,the global greenhouse gas emmissions have dropped by 30%!

    4. This is a good time to take stock and distinguish between needs and wants. When we do so, we find that we actually need very little to be happy.
We can simplify our lives ,limit our consumption of non-essentials without incurring great suffering.
Breath is all you need, really ---all the rest is ecxtra!

  12. I noticed the singing of the birds again (they were always there, just drowned out by the traffic noise)

in some ways the virus is a gift to us : we are reconnecting with the natural world and finding fulfillment in simple things that we had taken for granted and  lost appreciation for.
It has forced some introspection and self-reflection upon us....reminding us of Socrates' statement that "the unexamined life is not worth living"
We are taking time to do some soul-searching, to reassess our values and priorities...to ask ourselves what is really important and what gives purpose to our lives.
We are becoming more aware of all that we have and taking time to feel grateful, instead of focusing on and madly pursueing all that we don't have.
This shift in perspective can restore a sense of contentment and even joy!

  13. Human pandemics are caused by human contact with wildlife. Pathogens endemic in wild animals jump from their animal hosts to human. populations through increasing human contact and interactions with animals. As human population density increases , these interactions will inevitably increase. Human incursion into wildlife habitats will facilitate the transfer of animal pathogens to humans. This means that pandemics will be more frequent as Human population continues to grow.
.Perhaps it is nature's way of limiting human growth. --a negative. feedback loop!
