the quantum world

How much do we really see?

The Quantum Domain is the realm of the subatomic.

Quantum Mechanics attempts to understand the laws governing the behavior of subatomic particles and forces.

At the quantum level in the organization of matter...we enter the realm of the meta-physical ("meta" is Greek for "beyond"),the rules of wch we do not understand.
This is a realm Beyond that accessible to our senses and instruments--beyond the empirical, beyond what can be seen--essentially an invisible realm.
The "realm of the small" is the realm of the unknown
According to the material model, the universe is a material mechanism (everything that exists is material) whose constituent components interact according to decipherable laws.(the materialist bias is at the core of empirical science). But the material model breaks down when we enter the quantum realm.
Subatomic constituents are not so much tangible particles of matter as oscillations/waves of energy.
Science is based on the assumption that everything has a simple identifiable cause. But at the quantum level this is simply false.
Causal forces can arise from deeper foundational(vertical vs horizontal)levels in the organization of matter.Causation is no longer simplistic and linear,...and now it is only probabilistic.
Quantum theory does not give an objective picture/representation of the world(object of observation) that is independent of and unconnected to our role as observor/subject.Einstein was bothered by the fact that our observations influence and affect the event/object being observed.( According to Heysenberg the very act of observing disturbs/alters the object of observation.)There is no separation between observor and observed. The observor is integrally part of the universe observed. We are inseparably embedded in the universe.
see "The One,the only One"
At the quantum level events and forces are neither observable nor measureable, and certainly not reliably predictable. Here we come face to face with the limits of human understanding.
At the quantum level the rules wch are inviolate at the macro level no longer hold true. And becuz we have not deciphered the rules wch do apply,it seems that events occur without any rule, rhyme,or reason. It is a seemingly lawless realm ,or at least the rules that govern the macro world do not work here.
We live in a society in wch only material objects have value/reality.
Hence, the importance of forces within the quantum domain are minimized/discounted,and mostly disregarded as irrelevant. And yet the most powerful forces in the universe exist and act within the quantum domain--the foundational level of the universe!
We need only remind ourselves that the universe itself emerged out of the Quantum domain.
According to the Big Bang Theory of the origin of the universe, the entire universe in it's beginning was an infinitesimally small point in wch time and space did not yet exist!
Yes, there was a time(in the beginning when we weren't even a glimmer in our Father's eyes)when we could have held the whole universe in our hand.
Although these forces are presently in large measure inaccessible to our observational instruments,we must remember there was a time not so long ago when we did not know about the existence and the causative roles of bacteria, genes ,and atoms ...and so we could only attribute causation to observable/known forces and events!
Clearly the quantum domain is not causally disconnected from us,since the quantum and the macro domains are continuous and co-extensive.The two realms mesh harmoniously and are really one!
We are very limited in our capacity to probe and understand the subatomic domain of the universe. Our senses and brain have evolved to function within a narrow range of observation.
We don't even know how much of the universe exists at the subatomic level, and therefore how much of the universe is too small for our senses and instruments to detect and measure. It has been guestimated that atomic matter is only 4% of the entire universe. The rest (referred to as "dark matter") belongs to the realm of the unknown.(the Beyond)
It's like trying to look at something from a million miles away. All you see is a speck/point.You have no idea that if you could zoom in on it,it is a dog--something with form/structure and other previously undetectable features/morphology.But even our best instruments do not have the resolution to hone in on any distinct pattern or form.
Even on the macro scale, much of the universe is unobservable!
In the absence of any observable boundary we cannot exclude the possibility that the universe may extend infinitely in the macro direction/scale as well.(see "multiverses").
We do not know whether the micro-macrocosmic scale has upper or lower limits.
Clearly it is imprudent and inaccurate to assume that only what is observable exists .It would be like a blind man assuming that everything he can't touch, doesn't exist.
What we see depends on what our observational and measuring tools are capable of. The quantum world is not outside the universe;it's just outside of what's accessible to present-day science(and our senses).
Because we cannot access information about an event or object does not mean that such an event or object does not exist.Indeed it seems that most of the universe is invisible/unobservable to us.
We are unaware of everything outside our 3-dimensional universe. But most of the universe may be hidden within "extra" dimensions wch may be too small for us to see or measure,
Our current understanding of the forces of nature is rudimentary and primitive.
There is an awfull lot we don't know!
Such is our ignorance that we don't even know just how much we don't know.
Chemistry,genetics,electricity--these fields of knowledge were non-existent less than a hundred years ago, and have transformed our world and our lives .
How is the energy content of a proton(or any "material" particle)confined within the space occupied by the proton? What forces hold it in place?
There is no boundary or dicontinuity between the quantum world and the macro world .
What role does the quantum realm play in the function of biological organisms(quantum biology)?.How do quantum forces/events interact with events at the atomic and subatomic  levels in the organization of matter? How does energy input from the quantum domain interface and interact with molecular and cellular structure and function?
What quantum processes are at play in biological systems?
Altho' we have gained considerable understanding of biological processes at the cellular and molecular levels,...events at the deeper/deepest quantum levels remain largely inaccessible to us.
Perhaps "awareness" itself is embedded in the most fundamental, most basic quantum level of the universe! (see Stuart Hameroff's theory of consciousness)
The "soul" and even "God" may be concealed/hiding in the quantum domain!
Perhaps the spiritual dimension lies within the quantum realm.

No one can imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the universe.
There is a veil covering the unseen world that not even the united strenght of the strongest can tear apart.
Only faith (in things unseen),poetry ,love...can push aside that curtain and give us a momentary glimpse of the beauty , the glory, and the mystery Beyond.

the moral meltdown of America

America was founded on the premise and core value of "individual freedom" above all else. The extreme valuation of individual rights and freedoms is achieved at the cost of social cohesion and social order (see "the normalization of violence").
Libertarianism and individualism taken to extreme has resulted in the sanctification of selfishness and greed. All moral principles are subordinated to the promotion of self-interest and instant gratification/reward. America has become a nation of narcissists.
"Good " has come to be defined as "that wch benefits me personally"
Instead of perceiving "evil" as that wch is hurtful or injurious to others,it has come to signify "anything that opposes the furtherance of one's own desires and interests".
Individual freedom is idealized above morality.
In a society in wch the worth /value of a person is measured/judged by their wealth and power ,it is no great wonder that men willingly set aside their scruples , their conscience, and their integrity and commit all manner of wickedness in the pursuit of pleasure and the aquisition of material objects.
The deficit in personal morality is reflected in political corruption.
American politics is corrupt to it's core!
The motives of self-indulgence and self-aggrandisement trump every other principle.
Elected officials (so-called "public servants") do not behave according to what is right ,but set aside their conscience and allow themselves to be led by their personal desires.Behind a facade of altruism(public service),they serve the interests of corporations and pursue their own individual gain.
(see, "what has happened to the American experiment in Democracy?")
We must re-establish a balance between freedom and responsibility, otherwise we cannot maintain the integrity and cohesion of society as a whole.

Every religion decries greed as sinful.Greed drives one to lie ,steal, and commit all manner of wickedness.
Yet Capitalism encourages and glorifies greed.
In America greed is good!
(see:"Capitalism run amuck")
The "profit motive" poisons all human transactions.Dishonesty and deception have become endemic in our society, generating an ethos of distrust wch corrodes the very fabric of society.(Trust is key to sustaining all social relationships.Dishonesty poisons all relationships)
The richest 1% of the population in the USA has more wealth than the lowest 95%.
This disparity in the distribution of wealth is unjust and immoral.
The rich get richer at the expense of and through the exploitation of the labour of the poor. When the laws of the land fail to protect the people from being robbed by corporate gangsters ,then the people will reject their legitimacy and will refuse to comply with them. At some point the dispossessed will not obey and abide by the laws of the land wch allow such exploitation and will pick up pitchforks to protect/defend themselves from such abuse.

The uncontrolled greed and irresponsibility of the U.S. financial industry plunged the global economy into the worst recession since the 1930's.Yet Wall Street bankers have failed to make any correction in their behavior. They are again making outrageous profits and rewarding themselves with obscene bonuses (after being bailed out with trillions of dollars of taxpayers money ,and while the middle class remains in a world of hurt because of these immoral fat cat greedsters). Instead of admitting their moral failure and expressing contrition, they hire an army of lawyers and accountants to deny their culpability and to lobby congress to emasculate any regulatory legislation that might oversee their behavior and hold them accountable.
Every encroachment into the market by the federal government--under the guise of "reform"--is regarded as a violation of their entitlement, and demonized/stigmatized  as "socialism".
Clearly in America "money" and the "profit motive" trump moral principles. The highest principle in the corporate world is the maximization of profit. There is no higher set of values.
America's greatest threat is a deficit of moral values!
A country that loses it's moral compass has no future!

The pursuit of self interest is also reflected in American foreign policies (see,"the outsourcing of evil"),where moral force has been replaced by military force. America does not respect the legitimate aspirations and interests of others.
The richest most industrialized nation (wch produces the most industrial emissions)also has the highest rate of consumption and is therefore most responsible for depletion of the planet's resources and destruction/poisoning of it's ecosystems.
America's refusal to reduce it's emissions and pay it's fair share for the environmental consequences of climate change is irresponsible and immoral!
They defer the consequences of their decadent consumption by leaving a poisoned planet and an oppressive debt load to their children.

Those who are at the cutting edge of the struggle for social justice and human rights will always come into confrontation and conflict with the establishment wch weilds the reins of power and seeks only to maintain its own entitlement and to promote it's own interests...thereby allowing the continuation of injustice.

"the United States of America has commited more atrocities than any other nation on the planet"
"if there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America"

expansion of space versus contraction of time

distinquishing between the "expansion of space" and the "contraction of time"

The "red shift" need not be interpreted as an
"expansion of space",but rather as a "slowing of time".
Since space and time are concepts that are relative to each other (i.e. are defined in inverse relation to each other), a slowing of time would mean that it would take longer to traverse a fixed spatial distance, and if one were convinced that the movement of time remained fixed/unchanged/constant then one could only account for the fact that the journey took longer by assuming that the other variable(space/distance) had lenghtened or undergone expansion.
Thus the observation of an expanding universe/space could be accounted for with equal validity in terms of a contraction or slowing of time

Velocity or speed is defined as the rate of change in space(distance) as a function of time: V= D/T

http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/einsteinlight/jw/module4_time_dilation.htm

The nature of Velocity:
Velocity=V=d/t
Velocity is the rate of "contraction of space"as a function of "time"
Thus when we say that something ,"C"  travels at 186000 miles a second or 700 million miles an hour
we mean that in one second the spatial distance between object A (source) and object B (destination)
contracts/diminishes by 186,000 km.
If we vary one variable while holding the other constant:
Velocity increases by increasing "d" (the numerator) while keeping "t" constant, or by diminishing "t" (the denominator) while keeping "d" (space) constant.
"C' (the speed of light) is a fixed ratio of  "d/t".
For this ratio to remain constant, any increment or decrement in the numerator must be cancelled by an equivalent change in the denominator. Thus C= d+1/t+1 = C  ; C= d-1/t-1 =C ; d = Ct ; t = d/C
If "d" increased independently of "t",then C could not remain constant, but would increase.
Thus for "C" to remain constant ,there cannot be an "expansion of space" without a corresponding equivalent "expansion of time".
In other words any "expansion of space" must be cancelled out by an equivalent "speeding up of time"!
The "expansion of space" is a consequence of pegging the speed of light as a constant.
But if we instead fix/hold  "distance"/space as constant ,then it is the speed of light that must change with "time"!  C= v = d/t ;d = Ct

If light traveled twice as fast as it does...it would only take four minutes (instead of 8 minutes) to reach us from the sun.But the same effect would be achieved if space contracted by half
In other words, halving the distance between A and B (a contraction of space)is equivalent to doubling the speed of light! The corollary of this is that an expansion of space equal to a doubling of the distance between A and B, would be equivalent to halving the speed of light ...since it would take twice as long to traverse the expanded distance between A and B.

STRETCHING AND CONTRACTING SPACE AS THE SOLE CAUSE OF ALL MOTION

I suppose that's one possibility...if a law of "conservation of space" were in effect
But if space is expanding in all directions equally then the sides BC and AD are also moving away from each other (not towards each other)

SUPPOSE YOU HAVE A SQUARE ABCD. THEN AT SOME POINT IN TIME THE OPPOSITE SIDES AB AND CD START MOVING APART WHILE THE OTHER OPPOSITE SIDES START MOVING TOWARDS EACH OTHER. USING THE THEORY THAT OBJECTS ARE NOT REALLY MOVING BUT RATHER IT IS THE SPACE BETWEEN THEM WHICH CHANGES, DOES IT MEAN THAT THE SAME SPACE CAN STRETCH AND SHRINK AT THE SAME TIME?

To: tomas@yahoo.ca

Velocity =distance/time

If "space-time" are a single dimension then what does "velocity" mean?
These dimensions must be separated for "velocity" to have any meaning!

Light speed is not the fastest speed there is!
There does not appear to be any limit to the speed at wch space expands. Einstein only placed a limit (light speed)on the velocity at wch an object possessing mass can travel within space. Space is not a substance and theoretically has no mass.Space or volume is derived by cubing a linear dimension.
(see entry under "space,time,etc."
This generates a paradox : How is it possible to distinquish the increasing separation of two objects due to the expansion of space and another kind of motion that is not due to the expansion of space?...The relative motion between the two objects is the same and indistinguishable.
When describing the motion of one object in relation to another could we not say in equivalent terms that the objects themselves remain stationary, and it is the space between them that moves and undergoes expansion/contraction.
We say that the position of an object relative to another object cannot change at the speed of light because the mass of the object would become infinite. Why could we not simply avoid this problem by saying it is the space between the objects wch is expanding at light speed (or greater than light speed)? The objects do not accelerate to light speed(in fact they remain stationary);rather it is the space between the objects wch expands/contracts at light speed.
Are these not in effect equivalent descriptions of the same event?

If light waves are also stretched (red-shifted)as space expands then all measurements of spatial distance will be affected/distorted as the measuring rod(light) used to measure distance is itself lengthened!

The "expansion of space" increases the time required to traverse the distance/space between point A and point B.. Conversely ,"spatial contraction" decreases this time, ..and taken to the limit, both distance and time collase to zero! This "spatial collapse" might explain "quantum tunneling" whereby "energy" can traverse space  from point A to point B instantaneously.(without the constraint of the  light speed limit).
A corollary of this thesis follows:
To achieve travel at or greater than light velocity we need to learn how to contract space!
Perhaps changing space is no more an impossibility than breaking the sound barrier!
According to Einstein ,"space" is malleable  ,and can be bent and even collapsed.
(Incidentally "time" also is not a fixed entity ,but is also influenced by the speed of travel .
The flow of time slows to zero as we approach the speed of light, and at light speed time flow stops altogether.).
According to the Fitzgerald-Lorenz principle ,the dimension of lenght collapses to zero at the speed of light!
That is,at light speed ,space collapses in the direction of motion!
This is equivalent to stating that the spatial distance between A and B becomes zero, or that A and B occupy the same point in space,or that the distance between A and B can be traversed instantaneously.
This suggests that we can travel great distances instantaneosly by manipulating time and space.

Quantum theory casts doubt on the notion that distant objects are really separated since "entangled" particles can act instantaneosly in unison even if separated by the width of a galaxy. The question is ,does this quantum effect also apply to human-scale objects? (see "Quantum entanglement")
If it is not possible for there to be a separation between observor (A) and observed (B),then observor and observed are a unified and inseparable whole/unity (AB)!

Free Press? Why the mainstream media kowtows to those in power

Why we can't trust journalists to hold governments accountable.

In 1953,at a New York Press Club, John Swinton,Chief of Staff for the New York Times made the following statement:

"There is no such thing in America as an independent press. You know it,and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print.I am paid weekly for keepng my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with.Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job.If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my newspaper, before twenty four hours my occupation would be gone.
The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth;to lie outright;to pervert;vilify;to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it,and what folly is this toasting an independent press! We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We' re the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents ,our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. we are intellectual prostitutes"

A US Police Action:Operation Vampire Killer,The American Citizens and Laumen Association,pp 18,19

Some of the media's sole purpose is to provide entertainment.
Some of the media are part of the government's intelligence apparatus(Department of Information) whose purpose is to shape public opinion and public perception.
But even the so-called independent mainstream media outlets have co-opted and "toe the line" .They are unwilling to alienate their corporate masters/sponsors/advertizers.
Instead of questioning government policy and holding them accountable ,the media functions to articulate and parrot the gov't storyline as unquestionable truth.
We once imagined the media would guard the hen house.
Yet that was an anomaly, a freak event around Vietnam and Watergate when it slipped its leash. Since then, sixty independent media outlets have consolidated into five, all retailing the ideology of the powerful, the perpetrators, laundering their lies, covering up the truth, and harassing the truth tellers. The mainstream media have worked to ensure that the people didn't know the truth about the forfeiture of their government, their wealth, their security, and their rights.
It's rather telling that the mainstream media rarely focuses attention upon the motives of the so-called "insurgents".
How do people become radicalized? What desperation makes a person turn as a last resort to violence and even suicide? What makes someone think they are worth more dead than alive? What makes a person willing to sacrifice his own life in order to kill others? Why does someone relinguish the will to live? and what could we do to make them want to live? Why are children taught to hate?
Instead of providing in-depth analysis of the real issues, the media is content with superficial "name-calling" --labelling such persons with stigmatic pejorative words as "evil" or "enemy" or "terrorist" ...as if such labels and hackneyed expressions had some ultimate explanatory power.
Have you ever noticed how the media deliberately avoid discussing the human cost of war.
Sure they keep tabs on the number of American soldiers killed, but they don't mention the far greater number of civilian casualties. They don't care about civilian casualties--.
The media  trumpets the glory and the heroism of war ...not the day-to-day suffering of war.
Where are the monuments to the orphans and the civilian casualties of war?!
Instead of describing such atrocities as "war crimes" ,they use the euphemistic phrase "collateral damage"!
When people read only what matches their own beliefs ,and alternative views are supressed or go unreported, they are deprived of the Truth.

If you know anything about how conventional media is being used on a mass scale, you realize that typically someone is trying to sell you on something – an idea, an ideology, a certain mindset, in order to eventually produce a certain behavior.

Beware..., because deception is taking place through coordinated media manipulation.
We are continuously being inundated with commercials, television shows music, books, etc. --telling us what we should believe how we should act, and what we should buy.
To control someone's thoughts is to control their behaviour!

A handful of corporations control nearly all news media.
As the consequences of this monopoly on information become apparent ,
dependence on these outlets for relevant and reliable information becomes unacceptable.
With the developement of the internet it has become possible for anyone to bypass  the monopoly of

This technology has ignited  a renaissance in freedom of expression.
The internet provides a forum and a platform for all the news and views  not available in the corporate press.
Open source content generation ensures that no one voice or interest group may use money or undue influence to drown out the others.

In many ways the mainstream media is simply a mirror and a microphone for those who weild the reigns of power. They parrot the official storyline that the government wants the people to believe...rather than informing the people, providing insightful analysis, and above all  holding those in power to account.

Major media bought up to manipulate voters

To the editor:

In the last federal election, voter-turnout at 58.8-percent was the lowest in history. Only one-in-five first-time-eligible voters even bothered;  a recent survey reports only fifteen-percent of Canadians even follow federal politics.

The media—television, radio and newspapers—is the culprit. Deregulation has allowed our once diverse and independent media to merge into near monopolies—as BCE (Bell) buys CTV.  Your government has entrusted the crucial task of keeping the public informed to the greed and goodwill of a handful of businessmen/corporations.

We’re becoming like the US—“the most entertained but least informed people on the planet.”  Here the media is politics. That’s why General Electric—one of the world’s largest weapons manufacturers—buys NBC.  Not because they feel obliged to inform the public, but to win elections. Media owners have already demonstrated they could elect—then re-elect—a moron as their president.

US media have so confused its audience, eighty-percent still believe the deception of the Iraq invasion—which killed over one-million, men, women and children.

Canadians are a little better off because of our publicly owned CBC—and its mandate for truth and balance. Their great work has been hamstrung by partisan appointments and budget slashes. Senior Harper people have hinted of “getting out of the broadcast business” by outright selling the CBC.

“In the public interest” is the reason the Harper-appointed CRTC granted Sun TV News, aka “Fox News North,” a license. This station is owned by media giant Quebecor, who operate some 54 newspapers, 18 TV stations, film studios and more, nationwide—including the Harper propaganda tabloid disguised as a newspaper: Calgary Sun.

And not surprising, the Quebecor chairman, according to Wikipedia, is former PM Brian (Airbus) Mulroney. And the “Fox News North” station-manager is Harper’s  former communications director Kory Teneycke.

Mainstream camera-crews were suspiciously “not there” when Harper storm-troopers attacked the democratic rights and dignities of Canadians at Toronto’s G20.  This brutality—reported online by independent media and civilians with camera-phones—is still being suppressed by corporate media.  See for yourself,  watch the Fifth Estate documentary: “You Should Have Stayed At Home,” (online at cbc.ca/fifth/).

Before the four-hundred channel universe—when folks still talked to their neighbours and thought for themselves—voter turnout hovered around seventy-five percent. We were better entertained and more informed.  Get informed;... cancel your TV subscription.

The Wooden Bowl

The Wooden Bowl

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson.
The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered

The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and
failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor.
When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess.
'We must do something about father,' said the son.
'I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.'

So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner.
There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner.
Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone.
Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor.
He asked the child sweetly, 'What are you making?' Just as sweetly, the boy responded,
'Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up.
' The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.
For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family.. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

A holy man was having a conversation with God one day and said, ‘God, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.’
God led the holy man to two doors…
He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in.
In the middle of the room was a large round t able. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water.
The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished.
They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful.
But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.
The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.
God said, 'You have seen Hell.'
They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one.
There was the large round table with the large pot of stew, which made the holy man's mouth water.
The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, ‘I don't understand...’
‘It is simple,’ said God. ‘It requires but one skill. You see they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.’

war on mother nature

Without realizing it, we have begun to wage war on the Earth itself.
Now, we and the Earth's climate are locked in a relationship familiar to
war planners: mutually assured destruction. - Al Gore
